Various artists showcasing their work at the fence of the Honolulu Zoo on Monsarrat Avenue across from the bandstand at Kapiolani Park. Artists are allowed to display their 2 dimensional art paintings of oils, acyrlics, watercolor, and photography. Originals and prints are both sold. The Zoo Fence Artists are a non-profit group that contributes to organizations to promote arts education for children.

Marie @ Black Cat Tattoo Studio

Today I am looking at another one of my favorite styles of art... tattoos. I came across Marie's gallery at Black Cat Tattoo Studio, which by the way also is an art gallery. She is self described as "The Man Eating Zombie Woman" which I thought was pretty funny, but her artwork really interested me.  

My favorite was this "Virgin Mary" piece. I always enjoy looking at the different depictions of this image. I love the color palette. The colors themselves are very cheerful, and have a good contrast between the warm and cool colors. The style of her hair is similar to what I use in my drawings/paintings. I also love the old school style heart.

I also liked this Lego pirate. As a kid I loved playing with Legos, so I guess it brought me back to my childhood. It cracks me up that he has a 5 o'clock shadow :) 

       

Lastly, I really liked this Japanese style Koi Fish. I've seen may koi fish tattoos, but I really liked this one because the fish was blue and the waves were gray scale. It really made the fish "pop" plus the artwork was amazing.

Naughton states her paintings are composed of four subjects: trees, light, ocean’s edge, and windows.  All paintings are abstractions, suggesting other images.  While light, color, movement,
and shape become the ostensible subject matter of each painting, they strive for an aesthetic sensation beyond representation. The tree paintings were created on site at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden where there are fascinating and complex intertwining hau, kukui and hala trees, among others.  I experience the trees as intriguing abstractions of twisting lines, bright light, negative
space and hooked shapes.

Noreen Naughton earned her MFA in Painting in 1979 from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa.
She is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Kapi'olani Community College, University of Hawai'i, where
she taught drawing and painting, served as visual arts coordinator, and initiated the New Media Arts program.

 

Art Of The Hawaii Travel Industry

Vintage posters of early Hawaii travel advertisements. Obscure and well known artists have been interpreting and creating the feel and look of Hawaii since the early 1900s. Early advertising artwork was used primarily to entertain in shows that traveled the US mainland. These shows featured the mystique of island life, the Hula, and the raw natural wonders of erupting volcanos.

Landscape artwork, photos, magic lantern slides were the primary media used in these displays.
Later as cruise ships and Pan AM Clipper airplanes started their long runs to Hawaii, graphic art became a very important means for luring tourists to the paradise that is Hawaii.

The gallery has on display the artwork of Joseph Feher, John Kelly, Frank MacIntosh, Eugene Savage, Stan Galli, Louis Macouillard, Gene Pressler and many other unnamed artists. Also featured in many of these advertisements were beautiful models who became well-known icons
that represented the Aloha of Hawaii.

$3 for every 4 hours with validation, or $4 flat rate (evening) without validation or for parking beyond the validation period. Parking during member openings is free.
